Your golden chance to be a sporting champ
ATHLETES young and old should get ready for a sports event with a difference as the Middlewich Olympix comes to town. Gladiator games, children's races, an adult It's a Knockout competition and giant garden games are among the activities confirmed for the day so far, which will take place on August 12. The Olympix, organised by Middlewich and District Round Table and Middlewich Young Farmers, will be held at Middlewich Town Football Club, in Finneys Lane, from 3pm with a disco and live music from band Coverstory between 8pm and 11pm. Organiser John Humphreys, from the Round Table, said: "We used to have a three-day carnival over August Bank Holiday years ago but by virtue of the fact that numbers in the Round Table reduced and the cost of the event spiralled out of control we stopped doing it. "But we always hark back to what fun it was and what a good community event it was. "We were thinking about ways to gain interest and if we did a sports day-style event it would interest the kids during the holidays and parents with the live band in the evening." Children's fairground rides, giant garden games and a gladiator game, where opponents have to knock each other off podiums with giant battering rams, will be running throughout the event. Races will take place from 4pm to 5pm and It's a Knockout from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, with other events and displays yet to be confirmed. Entry forms for the races and It's a Knockout competition are available on the website www.middlewichroundtable.org.uk.The Guardian, in conjunction with event organisers, would like to offer readers free entry into the Middlewich Olympix. Admission is £1 for over 11s and free for children under 11 but if you collect three tokens from the Guardian you will be entitled to one free entry. The first token is printed in this week's paper.
